Regeneration of North Huyton moves a step closer

A multi-million pound scheme to transform North Huyton is moving forward with a series of public consultation events.

The events, will give residents a chance to have a look at the Outline Plan of the area and discuss the detailed proposals.

The Plan will detail the regeneration of the area which will create vibrant new housing, new schools, employment centres and new health, retail and community facilities.

This project will bring around £150m of new investment into the area. This is on top of £55.8m already secured for North Huyton under the New Deal for Communities Programme and £46m from Knowsley Housing Trust (KHT).

The redevelopment proposals will tackle low demand for housing by improving housing choice and mix, and will widen opportunities for home ownership. The proposals also include renewal of public facilities and improvements to transport links, public spaces and shops.

700 properties have been cleared and building work is about to start on 73 new rented homes for older people on vacant land in Hillside Avenue and Calgarth Road.

The partnership of North Huyton New Deal New Future, KHT and Knowsley Council selected the consortium of Keepmoat plc, MJ Gleeson Group plc and Lowry Homes in June 2005 as the preferred investor. The partnership and investor have since been negotiating the framework to ensure the regeneration programme fits the community’s requirements.

The partnership is fully committed to turning the community’s overall aims into actions and making the transformation of North Huyton happen. 78% of residents were in support of the proposed changes in the first stage of the plan which went out to consultation in 2003. Outline Plan stage 2 is a more detailed plan which incorporates residents’ responses and the developers’ proposals with timescales.
