At KHT we aim to make our services accessible to everyone. All our
publications are available in other languages, Braille, audio
tapes, CD and large print on request.

Accessible formats - Making Information Accessible
Background
All our leaflets and letters now contain a strap line advising our
customers of the availability of information in alterative
formats.
All KHT staff have received a copy of our Communication Guidelines
which identifies the need to provide information and communicate
with to customer in the most appropriate way and how to go about
arranging this.
Whenever a customer requests information in an alternative format
we record this on our systems so that whenever you receive
information from us it is in a format that is most appropriate to
you.
Listed below are the various formats which we can provide to you.

Audio Tape/CD transcription
Description
Providing text in a spoken format which is recorded by readers onto
cassettes
Those who may benefit from using this format include:
- People with sight impairments
- People whose spoken language is different to their written one
- People with learning disability
- People with dyslexia
Those who would like an alternative to Braille and prefer to
access information on tape
Braille
Description
Tactile method of reading and writing using raised dots to enable a
person to read with their fingertips.
Those who may benefit from using this format include:
- People with sight impairments who prefer an alternative to audio tape
People with sight and hearing impairments
Induction Loops
Description
Amplifies sound and reduces background noise. It works
by either placing a coil of wire around a room or by an infrared
system and can be either permanently installed or portable
Please note:
Hearing Aids need to be switched to the
‘T’ setting to receive transmission
Who may benefit from using this format: - People with hearing
impairments who use hearing aids
Large Print
Involves producing information in a larger font.
Those who may benefit from using this format include:
- Older people, people with sight impairments and people with learning disability.
Translation and
Interpreting
Description
A Translator works with written material, translating documents
from one language to another. An Interpreter works ‘in
person’ orally interpreting back and forth between two or
more individuals.
Those who may benefit from using this format include:
People whose first language is not English
Typetalk
Description
Textphone communication is a telephone system for people who are
hard of hearing, speech impaired or deafblind. Typetalk and
TextDirect allows people who use a textphone to communicate with
people who use a standard telephone by simply using the TextDirect
access codes
Those who may benefit from using this format include:
- People who are hard of hearing, have a speech impairment or who
are deafblind.
