Staying well this Winter

Cold weather can put some people at increased risk of falling ill. Following advice from the NHS will help you stay well this winter:

  • Layer up
Wearing lots of thin layers will keep you warmer than one thick layer.
  • Stay warm at night
Use a hot water bottle or electric blanket, but never use them together.
  • Eat well
Having at least one hot meal a day and regular hot drinks will help you keep warm.
  • Keep active
If possible, get out and about. If the weather is bad or you aren’t very mobile, ensure you don’t stay sitting down for more than an hour at a time or try chair exercises.
  • Heat your home
If you’re over 65, aren’t very mobile, have a health condition, or live with very young children, keep the temperature of your home at 18 degrees. If you’re on Universal Credit, you could get help with heating costs.
  • Be prepared
Make sure your cupboards are filled up with essentials and that you’ve got a stocks of any medicine you may need.
  • Ask about the flu vaccine
Check to see if you can get the flu vaccine for free on the NHS.
